If you’ve ever picked up a metal cabinet or a bracket with a clean right-angle bend, you’ve held the result of press brake forming. At DB Sheetmetals, it’s one of the services customers ask about most, usually because they know what they want to build but aren’t sure how a flat sheet becomes the finished part.

A press brake is a machine that bends sheet metal along a straight line. The sheet sits over a die while a punch comes down and folds the metal to a set angle. Repeat that along different edges and a flat blank becomes a box or a tray.

Typical parts include:

  • Electrical enclosures and wall mounted housings
  • Cabinets and pedestal boxes
  • Battery trays and rack components
  • Cable trays and brackets
  • Shop fittings and point-of-sale stands

It works across mild steel, stainless steel, aluminium, Zintec and galvanised steel, so the material can be chosen to suit the job rather than the machine.

A bend that’s a degree out might look harmless on a drawing. Once that part meets a door or a neighbouring panel, the gap shows and somebody has to fix it. Good press brake services measure the angle as they bend, which is why our machines use the AMADA Digipro system. It reads the angle wirelessly and feeds the result straight back to the controls, so the first part and the five hundredth match.

Ask about bed length, because a long panel needs a machine that can hold it in one pass. Ask about tonnage too, since thick gauge material needs real force. Finally, find out whether the supplier can programme complex multi-bend parts in 3D rather than working it out by trial and error.

Our Amada HFE 3i Series has a 3000mm bed and 130 tonnes of force, with barcode tooling to cut down on set-up errors. If you’d like to know whether press brake forming suits your design, ring DB Sheetmetals on 01440 706218 or send us an email at info@dbsheetmetals.co.uk and we’ll talk it through.
