If you’re specifying how two pieces of sheet metal should be joined, welding and self-clinching fasteners often end up on the same shortlist. They solve different problems, though, and picking the wrong one can cost you time or money further down the line. This is where our team here at DB Sheetmetals can help.

Welding

Welding fuses metal permanently using heat, and it’s the right call when strength and structural rigidity matter most. MIG, TIG and spot welding each suit different jobs. MIG handles aluminium and thicker material well, TIG gives a cleaner, more controlled result on detail-critical joins, and spot welding is fast and effective for joining two overlapping sheets. The trade-off is heat. Welding can distort thin-gauge material if it isn’t handled carefully, and it needs a skilled operator to get a consistent result across a batch.

Self-clinching fasteners

A self-clinching fastener, installed with a PEMSERTER press, is a different approach entirely. Rather than fusing metal, it’s pressed into a pre-punched hole under controlled force, and the fastener’s shank displaces the surrounding metal to lock itself permanently in place. There’s no heat involved, so there’s no risk of warping thin panels, and it gives you a reusable threaded point without needing access to both sides of the finished assembly.

Which one suits your project?

Structural joins that need to bear significant load are usually better served by welding. Enclosures and panels that need a threaded fixing point without visible hardware or heat distortion tend to work better with self-clinching fasteners. Plenty of projects use both across different parts of the same assembly, which is exactly where having both capabilities under one roof saves time.
